Brief information on Qixia Mountain

Qixia Mountain, also called Sheshan Mountain and Sanshan Mountain in ancient times, is located at the northeastern suburb of Nanjing City, 22 km from Taiping Gate. It is surrounded by mountains in three directions and borders Yangtze River to the north. The scenic area around Qixia Mountain runs to a total of 860 hectares. Due to the numerous places of interest and numerous stones and rocks, Qixia Mountain has become a well-known tourist resort.

Since Ming Dynasty, the autumn of Qixia Mountain is well-known. This lies in the fact that it has various maples. Apart from the sweet gums, there are red maples, Japanese maples, buerger maples, and beeches, Chinese pistachios. In late autumn, the red maple leaves spread all over Qixia Mountain, leaving a splendid sight.

The first attraction of Qixia Mountain is Mirror Lake, which is situated at the west gate of Qixia Temple. The Lake was built during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. In the lake, there is a pavilion, which is linked with the bank through the Zigzag Bridge. Eastwards, a crescent-shaped lake lies.

Walking along the mountain pass outside the southern wall of Qixia Temple, you can see a dagoba, which was built with white stones. It has five floors and eight surfaces, 18 m high. On the outer faces of the dagoba, a number of vivid reliefs are sculptured. The story about how Sakyamuni became a monk is carved on the dagoba foot. Thousand-Buddha Grottoes lies to the east of dagoba and is built against the mountain, totalling 294 niches for Buddha and 515 Buddha statues according to local statistics.

Besides these monuments on Qixia Mountain, there are still many other natural wonders and historic sites to visit and explore.
