Brief information on Xuanwu Lake  

Xuanwu Lake, located outside the northeastern city wall of Nanjing, is connected with the urban area through Xuanwu Gate and Jiefang Gate. In 1990, it was built as a park.

Xuanwu Lake assumes a diamond shape, occupying an area of 437 hectares with a 10-km circumference. In the lake, there are five islands (Huan, Ying, Liang, Ling and Cui Islands), which divide Xuanwu Lake into four parts that are linked through bridges or banks.

Huan Island is crooked and surrounds Ying Island, so it got the present name. Ying Island was once covered with cherries (known as ‘ying’ in pinyin) that had been imperial tributes, so it was thereafter called Ying Island. When the cherry trees blossom every year, people can enjoy the stunning sea of flowers.

Cui Island got its name because it is said that the crown prince Zhaoming of Liang Dynasty once built a Liang Garden here. The yearly Chrysanthemum exhibition held in this island is extremely attractive.

Ling Island produced water chestnuts (Lingjiao in pinyin) abundantly in the past, so it was called Ling Island. As for Cui Island, it got its name from the green bamboos and cedars growing on the island.

Around Xuanwu Lake, there are other attractions such as Zhonghua Gate, Mount Jiuhua and Jiming Temple.
