Brief information on Chang’s Compound  

Chang’s Compound is located in Chewang Village, Yuci District of Jinzhong City in Shanxi Province, about 38 and 18 kilometers away from downtown Taiyuan City and Taiyuan airport respectively. It is a splendid large-scale northern folk house architectural complex originating from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), once home to the notable Chang family. Chang was a famous merchant prince in Shanxi province who made his fortune at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, operating businesses in Zhangjiakou, Hankou, Shanghai, and even Russia at that time. Occupying an area of 6,000 square meters, Chang’s Compound was founded in the middle of the Qing Dynasty, but was extended and added to since then.

As a saying goes in Shanxi province, Chang’s Compound stretches two streets while Qiao’s Compound only covers a courtyard. This fully shows the grand scale of Chang’s Compound. The houses join closely together like the teeth of a comb or the scales of a fish in Chang’s Compound, and each of them has strong points. The storied buildings, pavilions, terraces and towers, as well as the patio and garden, contrast finely with each other, reflecting the economic power of the Chang family in those days. The strong and unyielding main building, plus the beautiful annex, makes this a northern folk house but with the rare elegance of southern gardens.
