Brief information on Chenghuang Temple  

Pingyao City God Temple, or Chenghuang Temple, is a bright pearl in the various ancient architectures of Pingyao, and also a focal point in this ancient city’s landscape. It is a full scale Taoist temple with deep religious, historical and cultural meaning. Besides the main hall and sleeping hall, this imposing and unique building consists of four parts, liucao hall, wayside shrine, kitchen god temple and temple of the god of wealth.

Situated in the eastern part of Pingyao City, Chenghuang Temple was founded in the Ming Dynasty, rebuilt in 1544, and then repaired in the early Qing Dynasty. In 1859 it was destroyed in a fire and then reconstructed in 1864. Today’s temple is the Qing style, covering an area of over 7000 square meters.

The City God Temple of Pingyao features ingenious architectural construction and colored glaze art, boasted by the palace hall, porch, pavilion, terraces. Stepping into the solemn temple, travelers can learn the ceremonial system of the city and experience the distinct religious and architectural history and culture.
