Ming and Qing Street, also named “South Street” or “Nan Da Jie”, is one of the essences of the historical heritage in Pingyao, and also the most prosperous part and significant financial center of China in past times, reputed as the “Wall Street of China” during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Along this 750-meter long street are over 100 ancient shops, built with bricks and stones completely in the Ming and Qing style, and all original ancient buildings. In the past, these shops dealt with nearly all fields of commerce, such as banking, medicine, tobacco, silk, clothing and so on. Although some of the shops have changed the nature of their businesses, they’ve all retained their original features, making the street a good place to explore ancient Chinese culture.
