Brief information on Wang Family Compound  

The Wang Family Compound lies in Jingshen Town about 12 kilometers from Lingshi County in Shanxi Province. It is just 2 kilometers away from the ancient Zishou Temple, and belongs to the same common traveling route along with Yungang Grottos, Taiyuan Jinci Temple, Piangyao Ancient City and Hukou Waterfall.

Covering an area of 150,000 square meters, the Wang’s Compound is a masterpiece of Qing Dynasty residential architecture, which is today also known as “China Civil Dwelling House Art Museum”. Currently only three of its complexes, Gaojiaya, the Hongmenbao and the Ancestral Temples are open to the public. These were built one after another during the reigns of Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong and Jiaqing Emperors of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), consisting of 123 large and small courtyards and 1,118 rooms. Among them, the buildings at Gaojiaya and Hongmenbao stand from east to west, facing each other, and are linked by a bridge. Both of them are totally closed, castle-like constructs, sitting atop the loess plateau in picturesque disorder, completely functional and magnificent. The exquisite workmanship, with original design reflected in the carving of its bricks, wood and stone, is another feature of the Wang Family Compound.
