Zhenguo Temple lies in Haodong Village, about 15 kilometers north of Pingyao ancient city, which was added to the World Cultural Heritage List along with Pingyao Ancient Town and Shuanglin Monastery in 1997. The temple was first built in 963 during the Five Dynasties, and then reconstructed in 1815, the twentieth year of Emperor Jiaqing’s reign of the Qing Dynasty. Covering an area of more than ten thousand square meters, the Zhenguo Temple consists of distinct front and back sections. In the front of the temple is Tianwang Hall, containing the statues of the Four Heavenly Kings in the center, and over 20 stone steles on the left and right sides of the porch, depicting the centuries-old history of the temple. The Goddess of Mercy Hall and the Ksitigarbha Hall are respectively on the east and west sides of the back section of the temple. Zhenguo Temple is one of the most ancient wooden structures in China, well known throughout the world for its splendid building technique.
