Brief information on Little Qingdao Isle  

Little Qingdao Isle is located in Qingdao Bay, which is on the north side of the Jiaozhou Bay estuary. The tiny isle occupies an area of 0.012 square kilometers, 720 meters from the coast and 17 meters above sea level. Along with Zhan Qiao Pier, Little Qingdao Isle is a symbol of Qingdao. Its shape resembles a guqin, an ancient Chinese instrument, so the island is also called Qin Island.

In the early 1900s, after the German seizure of Qingdao, a lighthouse was built on Little Qingdao Isle to guide ships entering and leaving Jiaozhou Bay. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the lighthouse was rebuilt on a large scale. The height was raised to 15.5 meters and the exterior painted white.

The Japanese occupied Qingdao twice and built a seawall (377 meters long and 8 meters wide) to link Little Qingdao Isle to the shore. In 1988, the isle was relandscaped as a park covered with flower gardens and black pines. The Qinnü statue, pergolas, waterside pavilions and arbor make it a charming place to spend some time.
