Brief information on Tianheng Island  

Tianheng Island, 3.5 kilometers off the coast of Wali Town in Jimo City, is a long narrow island, 1.4 kilometers from east to west. The island gets its name from Tianheng, a king of the state of Qi in the early Han Dynasty, who once inhabited the island.

The most famous local historical site, the mass grave of 500 warriors who supported Tianheng, is located in the western part of the island. After Tianheng’s death, the warriors committed suicide rather than submit to the rule of the Han Dynasty emperor. On the north side of the large mound, a gravestone is inscribed with the words “The Tomb of the King of the State of Qi Tianheng and His 500 Warriors”. Built in 1982, the oblong gravestone is 44 centimeters long, 19.5 centimeters wide and 7.5 centimeters thick. The south side of the grave is marked with a solemn statue of Tianheng and a group of the 500 warriors.

Nowadays, Tianheng Island is home to fishing and farming community of 200 households. The western and northern parts of the island have been developed as a resort that includes three villa complexes, a firing range and a children’s playground. Visitors can also enjoy around-island sightseeing, sea fishing, surfing, parachuting and other activities.

One of Tianheng Island’s specialties is the Tianheng inkstone, which is used for mixing ink in Chinese painting and calligraphy. The stones are widely available for purchase on the island.
