Brief information on Caoyang New Village  

Caoyang New Village is the first Worker’s Housing Project in Shanghai established by the government in the 1950s. It’s also the earliest working village in China. The village, occupying a total area of 180 hectares and with a construction area of 1.678 million square meters, is a major residential area, which has a population of more than 100,000, located in west Shanghai.

Caoyang New Village is equipped with all necesary facilities, with businesses and service shops dotted around the streets. The Caoyang Shopping Mall area has already become the commercial center while the East Cao’an Road has formed a bustling commercial street. Caoyang New Village, with its beautiful and elegant environment, is also the first comprehensive green village in Shanghai. As the first village opened to the outside world, it has welcomed more than 10 million foreign guests from 155 countries and regions. Today the village has a considerable reputation.

If you want to experience the life of an ordinary Shanghai resident, please come to Caoyang New Village and spend a day with a local family. In the early morning, you can practice shadow boxing with the local people. Then go to the free market to buy some vegetables, together with the elderly members of the family. You could learn to prepare a few Shanghai dishes and taste your own cooking at the same table with your host family, which may have three generations under the same roof. A great deal of traditional, wholesome fun!
