Brief information on Nanjing Road (Nanjinglu)  

Nanjing Road stretches 5.5 kilometers from the Bund in the east, to the junction of Jingan Temple and Yan’an West Street in the west, with Shanghai’s center point People’s Square in the middle. The Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is a car-free central section between People’s Park and Henan Middle Road including two sections, East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. The road to the east of Tibet Road is known as East Nanjing Road, while the road to the west is called West Nanjing Road.

Nanjing Road was the first commercial road in Shanghai. Incredible though it may seem today, there were only four department stores along this road in the early part of the 20th century.

Today, however, it is regarded as the city’s principal shopping street, with more than 600 shops and shopping centers providing high quality, brand goods on both sides of the road. Nanjing East Road is more historical and offers more down-market products, while Nanjing West Road is brash and modern, therefore catering more to the status-conscious luxury shoppers. Some first class hotels are also scattered along the road, including the Peace Hotel and the Portman.
