Shanghai’s Confucian Temple is the only piece of architectural homage to China’s great philosopher, Confucius, in downtown Shanghai. . The original temple was erected in 1294, but was built at its current site in 1855, occupying an area of 1.13 hectares. The temple was restored in 1999 to celebrate the 2,250th birthday of Confucius.
The Confucian Temple, categorized into family temple, state temple and school temple, was an imperial construction to worship Confucius and other representatives of Confucian culture. It distinguishes itself by combining the state temple with a school. As a result, it is a place for both worship and education, so that traditions may be maintained.
Shanghai Confucian Temple is an architectural wonder, elaborately designed with pagodas, small bridges, flowing water and lush greenery which make the place a unique Jiangnan garden (garden of southern part of lower reaches of Yangtze River). In addition, it was also the highest seat of learning in Shanghai during ancient times.
