Brief information on Shanghai Old Street  

Walking into Shanghai Old Street, will probably make you think you have arrived in a bustling open-air market of turn-of-the-century (1900) Shanghai. Nestling in the Yuyuan Garden commercial tourist area, the street affords the perfect tourist combination of sightseeing, shopping, entertainment and cultural shows. At one time, the street also housed Shanghai’s earliest native bank, gold and silverware shops. There are also pubs, theaters and many commercial businesses located in vicinity.  

Formerly named Middle Fangbang Road, these 825 meters long old Street starts from South Henan Road in the west and ends at Renmin Road in the east. The street is mainly laid out with ancient buildings with black tiles and white-washed walls, red pillars and upturned eaves, typical of the architectural style of old towns in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Here you will find many shops and stores dating back more than 100 years, such as the Old Shanghai Tea House, Chunfeng Deyi Restaurant, Xishi Soya Beancurd Store, Dingniangzi Cloth Store, and Baoyintang.  

As an ideal place to explore old Shanghai, and also an important east-west passageway to Shiliupu, the City God Temple and Yuyan area, Shanghai Old Street fully expresses the historical and cultural evolution of old Shanghai in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Tourists can enjoy the unique local flavor whilst absorbing the typical human and cultural elements of old Shanghai.
