Brief information on Xintiandi

Situated in the center of Shanghai city just south of Huaihai Middle Road, the Xintiandi area was built from February 1999 to June 2001. It starts from Huangpi South Road in the east and stretches to Madang Road in the west, occupying an area of 30,000 square meters with a construction area of 60,000 square meters.

Shanghai Xintiandi is an urban tourist attraction which is replete with the city鈥檚 historical and cultural legacies. Originally crowded with lanes of old Shikumen buildings constructed in the 19th century, the area is now a representative architectural combination of traditional Chinese and foreign construction styles.

Xintiandi was constructed by converting the old residential area into a modern multifunctional entertainment center with lots of international standard restaurants, cafes, bars and boutiques. The shops retain the exterior of the Shikumen housing of old Shanghai with their original antique walls, tiles, but with well designed and decorated interiors, in a modern style.

Stepping into Xintiandi, you will not only experience the modern lifestyle of Shanghai鈥檚 denizens but also get an idea of how Shanghai looked in the 1920鈥檚.
