Shanghai Subway

Shanghai Metro is one of the youngest and fastest growing rapid transit systems in the world which is composing of both bus and light railway lines. In 1995, the fist line of the Shanghai metro as a north-south axis was opened to public following Beijing and Tianjin in China. However, at present time, the metro line has already reached a total length of 225 kilometers, with 161 stations and 8 lines. And the metro network is operated by two companies, both the sub-groups of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd. The Line 1, Line 2, Line 3, Line 4, line 8 and Line 9 are managed by Shanghai Metro Operation Co., Ltd while the Line 5 and Line 6 are under the operation of the Shanghai Modern Rail Transit Co., Ltd.

As many metro systems in the world, the ticket fare of Shanghai Bus is proportional to the distance. Or we can say the charge of Shanghai Metro is distance based. Generally speaking, the ticket price is CNY 3 for the distance no more than 6 kilometers, and then CNY 1 for each succeeding 10 kilometers. And the passengers who hold the Shanghai Public Transportation Card will get a 10% discount for the rest of the calendar month after paying the bus fare over CNY70 in a month. In addition, if the passenger transfers to the metro within 90 minutes from an air-conditioned bus, he will get a CNY 1 discount. Moreover, the transportation card can also allow for once an overdraft of CNY 8. However, the card will not be used any more if not deposit in time.
