Brief information on Shennongjia Nature Reserve  

Shennongjia Nature Reserve, established in 1982, lies in northwestern Hubei Province and occupies an area of 70,467 hectares, with 96 percent forest coverage. It was approved as a national nature reserve in 1986 and joined the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Program in 1990. Due to the special geographic conditions and effects of glacial motion, Shennongjia Nature Reserve contains many ancient, rare and endemic plants.

The types of fern and seed plants alone number 2,062, of which 32 are under national protection, such as the dove tree, emmenopterys henryi oliv, the katsura tree, the gingko tree and the yew, and 33 are native to Shennongjia Nature Reserve. Moreover, the reserve contains a wide variety and quantity of rare medicinal plants, which have earned it a reputation as a giant herb garden. As for the area’s diverse wildlife, the vertebrate species number 334, of which 54 species are under national protection, including the golden monkey, South China tiger, leopard, Reeves’s Pheasant, golden eagle and giant salamander.

Shennongjia Nature Reserve is a unique well-preserved sub-tropical forest ecosystem in the northern hemisphere. Magnificent natural scenery and mysterious legends about the reserve’s inhabitants continue to draw visitors.
