Brief information on Rongbuk Monastery  

The construction of the Rongbuk Monastery took place in 1899 over 100 years ago by  a lama named Ngawang Tenzin Norbu of the Red Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Located at the foot of the Mount Qomolangma in Tibet, it is the highest Monastery in the world. With a height of 5,800 meters above sea level, it is also a vantage point for watching Mount Qomolangma. The monastery once housed over 500 Lamas, but now only 50 nuns and Lamas live there.

Altogether there are five buildings in the Monastery but only the first and second floor can be used today. It is said that the monastery was built here is for its tranquility so that the Lamas can conduct their study smoothly. However, as tourism developed, more and more people now come to Rongbuk Monastery and Mount Qomolangma, making it less quiet as before and harder to study.

Buddhist images of Sakyamuni and Padmasambhava are enshrined in the main hall of the monastery and are worth seeing when visiting Rongbuk. The Monastery also serves as a base camp for climbing Mount Qomolangma from the northern slope. Walking, it takes 2 hours to the Mt. Everest Base Camp, and 15 minutes by car. The best scenery can be seen in the morning or at dusk. Standing in the Rongbuk Monastery, you can see Mount Qomolangma like a gigantic pyramid, towering in the mountains above.
