Established in the Northern Song Dynasty, Canglang Pavilion, (which is actually a courtyard), is renowned as the most ancient among all of the surviving gardens in Suzhou.
A Song Dynasty poet named Su Shunqin in purchased the garden and renovated it, building pavilions, water features, rock formations and then nominated it as Canglang (blue waves). Canglang Pavilion acquired its fame after being celebrated in a poem, Canglang Pavilion, by a contemporary of Su Shunqin, Ouyang Xiu. It became the residence of a notable general fighting against the Jin State in the Southern Song Dynasty; and in 1873, it was reconstructed to the form and style that contemporary visitors see. Canglang Pavilion reputation is well-deserved, thanks to the natural beauty of the original characteristics of the materials. There have been no extraneous embellishments, making the whole scene natural and authentic.
The most celebrated Canglang Pavilion stands atop the mountain, and has an ethereal elegance perfectly suited to the atmosphere of the garden itself. Mingdao Hall is a large- scale complex, and also features omnipresent bamboo, which lends further charm to the surroundings.
