Covering an area of 23,300 square meters, the Lingering Garden was originally a private garden built in 1593 during the Ming Dynasty and was recorded on the world heritage list by UNESCO in 1997. Boasting status as one of the four most renowned gardens in China, it is famous for the exquisite beauty of its magnificent halls, and buildings in various sizes, shapes, and colors.
Elaborately designed, the garden provides changing scenes at every turn. Celebrated for its artistic way of dealing with spaces between various kinds of architectural form, it is divided into four parts: middle, eastern, northern and western parts which are connected by a 700 meter-long corridor with an ancestral temple and houses to the south of the garden.
The middle part is noted for its view of the water, and is regarded as the best of the four. This part was the original Lingering Garden(the Xu’s East Garden and the Liu’s Hanbi Villa) while the eastern, northern and western parts were added during the Qing Dynasty. The eastern part wins its fame via its unique cloister construction, where you can enjoy the Crane House, the Small Garden of Stone Forest, and the Return-to-Read Study. The northern part is now a bonsai garden with a country-flavor, in which around 500 valuable bonsai are displayed. The western part is the highest part of the whole garden, and offers a beautiful rockery.
