Brief information on Lion Grove Garden  

Renowned for its oddly-shaped rocks and deep caves, Lion Grove Garden is another of Suzhou’s classic gardens. A monk called Tianru constructed the garden to commemorate his teacher, naming the garden after the rock’s resemblance to Yuan Dynasty lions.  

Lion Grove Garden has a prominent   series of man-made mountains with various buildings around the lake, and an artificial waterfall and cliffs at the edge of the lake to the west. The Hall of Peace and Happiness is one of the main architectural features in the garden. Divided in half, the northern part of the hall differs from the southern part in many respects, such as beam-framing systems, furnishings, pavements, carvings and window design.  Visitors can appreciate the inventiveness of the design and construction. The garden was once a popular place for Suzhou’s scholars at who came here to write poems and paint pictures. In 1918, it was purchased and refurnished by Pei, an industrialist, and became the garden visitors see today. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Pei’s donated it to the State.  Lion Grove Garden has been open to the public since 1954.
