Brief information on Mudu Ancient Town  

With more than 2,500 years of history, Mudu is a contemporary water town within Suzhou City. The tranquil ancient town is located at the west of Suzhou, on the bank of Taihu Lake and situated in the lap of many notable mountains.

Mudu is an inspiring place which has produced many outstanding personalities. From the Northern Song Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty, Mudu saw the development of many scholars, writers and artists.

As a transfer hub between Suzhou City and Taihu Lake, Mudu was the most prosperous commercial port in west Suzhou City. After 200 years, Mudu still keeps the arrangement and appearance of an ancient town. Old mansions, peaceful courtyards, exquisite bridges and flowing waters populate the flourishing water town.

Mudu is surrounded by mountains, and sits alongside Taihu Lake, housing many rich families’ gardens and celebrities’ former residences. It is the only ancient garden town in China and tourists still have opportunities to enjoy these well-preserved spaces. Yan Family’s Garden, the former residence of a famed Chinese poet, Shen Deqian, is an outstanding example of the local gardens. In addition, Hongyin Mountain House, Gusong Garden and Bangyan Mansion are all worth a visit.

Mudu is exquisite and elegant, with a leisurely atmosphere and cultural heart. Entering Mudu, you are traveling through poetry and 2,500 years of history.
