Also named Bao’en Temple Pagoda, North Temple Pagoda is the most ancient Buddhist temple in Suzhou. The temple, with more than 1,700 years of history, is said to have been established in the Three Kingdom Period by Sun Quan, the emperor of Wu State.
North Temple Pagoda is the highest in Suzhou, with a height of 76 meters, and it is in the same style as the Six Harmonious Pagoda in Hangzhou. The Pagoda body consists of the outer cloister, inner cloister and a square room in the center. Visitors can climb up along the wooden stairs in the inner cloister and overlook the panorama of the city as well as the hills, waters and rural sceneries in the distance.
There are still some well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architectures surrounding the pagoda, among which, Guanyin Palace is the most well-kept Ming Dynasty construction. Besides, to the north of Guanyin Palace, there is a corridor displaying the largest lacquer carving in China.
