Brief information on Retreat and Reflection Garden  

Located in Suzhou’s Tongli Town, Retreat and Reflection Garden was built between 1885 and 1887, in the Qing Dynasty. Quoting the meaning of a sentence from a renowned ancient Chinese book, Zuo Zhuan, C “take a step back and ponder your faults that you may remedy them, the garden named Retreat and Reflection.”

The residence of the garden is divided into two parts, the inner house and the outer house. The Outer house, with its three-row-room, was used for receiving guests and holding ceremonies. The Inner house includes living rooms with master and servants segregated.  The Middle hall is a transition from residence to garden. Retreat and Reflection Garden is centered on water, and the architectural features and rockeries were set along the water, thus highlighting the vastness of the expanses of water. Another must-see in the garden is the unique architecture of the boat house.  Besides the aforementioned features, the garden houses 24 buildings, 28 tablets, 12 steles and 15 valuable ancient trees.
