Brief information on Yi Yuan

Established in the Qing Dynasty, somewhat later than other gardens in Suzhou, Yi Yuan displays the features of double corridor, couple hall, rockeries and stone chamber. The garden is divided into two parts: on the western side is ancestral hall, and on the southern side of the garden visitors can approach the residence itself. It was originally the residence of a high official of the Ming Dynasty, Wu Kuan. Then, an officer of the local government of the Qing Dynasty, Gu Wenbin, purchased the garden and extended it on the existing site. After the death of his grandson, the garden fell into decline. In the 1940s, Yi Yuan became a popular entertainment venue, featuring, among other things, opera. Visitors have been enjoying the garden since 1953 when Gu Wenbin’s descendants kindly donated the courtyard to the country.
