Brief information on Fen River Park  

Taiyuan Fen River Scenic Area refers to Fen River Taiyuan City Area Beatification Project, completed in September 2000 and opened to the public then with total investment of 560 million yuan.

The scenic area covers north from upstream of Shengli Bridge, south to downstream of South Inner Race Bridge, with 6 kilometers in length and 500 meters in width and the total area is 300 hectares. It was designed into artificial compound channels and divided into two drainages by the middle wall. The east side is filled with clear water in width of 220 meters; the west side is a channel for unloading flood from upstream and reservoir irrigation in width of 80 meters. There are box-shaped sewage unloading trenches arranged on both sides of the river, for accepting the water from sewage pipes of cities along the side of the river and sending to the sewage treatment factory downstream for purification.

From the design to construction, Fen River Scenic Area is positively carried out “people-oriented” concept along with “Human, Ecological, Urban and Culture” theme. Taiyuan combines the river environmental protection and urban greening and maintains the city’s waterfront area in good natural ecology, to achieve a harmonious relationship between man and nature, urban development and the environment.

15,268 trees, 8301 shrubs, colorful blocks of 40,000 square meters, and turf of 820,000 square meters are planted on the scenic area, forming 1300,000 square meters Greenland and 1780,000 square meters water surface, so that increased 1.5 square meters green land in the urban public space per citizen.

On December 28, 2001, the Ministry of Construction awarded the project “China Habitat Environment Award for Best Practices” and recommended declaration on other awards of Human Settlement to United Nations. May 30, 2002 UN-Habitat decided to grant Fen River attractions as “2002 United Nations Dubai International Award on Best Practices of Human Environment Improvement”.

According to the overall planning, Fen River Scenic Area (Taiyuan Urban Beautification Project) will again be extended to the south and north by 6.2 kilometers, with a total investment of 600 million yuan. At present, the north extension, the Fen River Park Wetland Park has been completed; the south extension project has also been under construction. Fen River attractions will form almost 13 km long’s green corridor, to provide a good place for citizens of Taiyuan.
