Phone Services
Phone booths can be easily found in Taiyuan urban area, in which IC card or 201 card can both be applied. Both cards can be found easily in supermarkets or groceries.

If you are using a GSM 900/1800 cellphone, you can roam onto local networks directly, but the rate is very high. If you tend to stay in Taiyuan for more than a few days, buying a prepaid Chinese SIM card is usually cheaper.

China UnionPay’s bankcards can be used in Taiyuan urban area conveniently, however, there are few ATMs in scenic spots. Prepare cash especially change beforehand is necessary.

MasterCard, Visa, American Express are widely used in star rated hotels, fine restaurants, large shopping malls and ATMs in Taiyuan.

Languages
All Chinese understand some English for it is a compulsory course from primary school or even earlier. However, only a few can take part in an English conversation for the education is focused on grammar, reading and writing rather than speaking.
Staff in scenic spots speak fluent mandarin while most of the local citizens speak their local vernacular.

The opening time of post offices in Taiyuan varies a little. Post Offices are open usually 8 am to 9 am and closed at 5 pm to 6 pm Monday to Saturday.

Large hotels and local airport often have post services as well.

Toilet Facilities
In order to make the passerby easily find a toilet, from 2004, the first 77 organizations have opened their toilet facilities to the public. Currently, the number of open toilets has been up to 585. Thus, people can find one quickly in hotels, bus stations, scenic spots, airport, railway station, restaurants, department stores, etc. and use it for free except for those mobile ones.
