Taizhou Travel Guide - Brief Information on Taizhou
Taizhou is a prefecture-level city in eastern Zhejiang province. It borders Ningbo to the north, Shaoxing to the northeast, Jinhua to the west, Lishui to the southwest, Wenzhou to the south, and looks out over the East China Sea to the east. With a land area of 9,411 sq. km. and shallow sea area of 80,000 sq. km., Taizhou administers three districts (Jiaojiang, Huangyan and Luqiao), two county-level cities (Linhai and Wenling) and four counties (Yuhuan, Tiantai, Xianjü and Sanmen). With a coast line of 745 km, it covers some 28% of the Zhejiang coast line. The population of Taizhou is over 5.5000 million.
Taizhou has a long and rich history. The ancestors began to settle in this area five thousand years ago when it was first called Huipu Town during the Qin Dynasty, until during the Tang Dynasty it became known as Taizhou.
Local traditional folk arts and crafts are well developed in Taizhou. “Taizhou Luantan”, is one of 318 local operas in China, and took shape during the Qing Dynasty. Taizhou also produces colorful folk arts, such as Storytelling, Rylics to Dagu, Daoqing (chanting folk tales to the accompaniment of simple percussion instruments), Lion Dance, Boat Racing, Stilt-walking, Dragon Lantern Dance and many more forms of traditional Chinese heritage.
