Situated on Dongmennei Street in the downtown area of Tianjin, this temple was established to honor the great ancient Chinese philosopher and educator Confucius. First founded in the Ming Dynasty, Confucius Temple is the best-preserved and the grandest ancient architectural complex in the city.
Confucius Temple consists of Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Palace Hall, Shrine of the Great Wise Men (Chongshengci) and Side Hall. Being the main building of the temple, Dacheng Palace Hall, covered with yellow-colored glazes, is the only example of this particular architectural style in Tianjin, and is also the principal place for offering sacrifice to Confucius each year. Outside the temple, two decorated archways stand on both the east and west sides of the street, and are uniquely shaped.
Heavily repaired in 1985, the Confucius Temple now houses a museum and now enjoys a reputation as a key site of historical interest, not only for its architecture, but also for the cultural relics it houses.
