Brief information on Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves

The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, located in Mutou Valley in the middle section of Flaming Mountain, have a history of over 1500 years. They are situated 15 kilometers north of the ancient city of Gaochang and 45 kilometers east of Turpan City. The oldest caves were chiseled in the 5th century A.D. and the newest were carved in the 14th century, giving the complex a construction history of one thousand years. Currently, a total of 57 caves exist. Among them, over 40 have murals. The high quality murals are considered to be masterpieces of religious art and provide valuable information for researching the history, Buddhist background, culture and art of this area as well as the relationship between the West and ancient China. In addition, the themes of the mural paintings and their artistic style tell us something of the nature of the ancient society is which they were made.
