In the Yarnaz Valley, 13 kilometers west of Turpan city, Xinjiang province, are the Jiaohe Ruins. built by the Cheshi people in the Qin and Han dynasties. The name ‘Jiaohe’ refers to the two rivers that join together in the southern part of the town. The Jiaohe Ruins are a monument to the history of development in this area. They were not only constructed by different ethnic minorities but played a quite significant role in promoting cultural exchanges between East and West.
Jiaohe was the capital city of the South Cheshi Kingdom from 108 BC to 450 AD whilst the Han, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties were in power in greater China. It was a vital site along the Silk Road trade route to the West.
With a unique natural environment, almost all of the Jiaohe ruins were dug from the natural earth so that their height varies - the tallest reaches the height of three buildings. The ruins still stand tall after enduring blazing sun and pouring rain for over 2,300 years. It is the best preserved city entirely constructed from earth in the world.
Nowadays, the Jiaohe Ruins are becoming more and more popular with tourists since the government made moves to protect this unique attraction.
