Brief information on Heavenly Lake  

Heavenly Lake is located to the east of the Tianshan Mountain range, in the north of Bogda Peak, 97 km south of Urumqi City, Xinjiang Province. Known as Yaochi in ancient times, the lake is situated 1,910 meters above sea level, with an average depth of 60 meters. Heavenly Lake is a natural and typical alpine lake, which is 3,400 meters long and 1,500 meters wide, occupying an area of 4.9 km². The lake forms a crescent shape and the water is cool, crisp and clear. Surrounded by mountains, verdant forest and assorted flora and fauna, Heavenly Lake is rightly regarded as a jewel in the crown of Tianshan Mountain.  

Heavenly Lake doubles as an equally ideal and appealing summer and winter alpine resort, and many athletes can be found here-especially during winter months-as they gather for training and competition. The mountain ranges surrounding Heavenly Lake are home to a wide variety of rare animals and plants, such as white snow lilies, snow cocks, radix codonopsitis, caladium and mushrooms.  There are also many species of fish in the lake, which is a unique aspect of Heavenly Lake when compared to other lakes.  Additionally, Heavenly Lake is replete with minerals such as copper, iron and mica. With such abundant natural resources and splendid scenery, Heavenly Lake is a great place for tourist-and also for scholars keen to study the many rare examples of animal and plant life to be found here.
