Brief information on Red Hill Park

Red Hill, the symbol of Urumqi, sits in the center of Urumqi city on the east bank of the Urumqi River, like a huge dragon lying from east to west with its head tending to the river. The hill is called Red Hill because it is made up of aubergine rock with a reddish brown color. The Hill is 1.5 kilometres long and 1 kilometre wide from east to west, and stands 910.8 meters high. If you have the energy to make it to the peak of Red Hill, you will be rewarded with fantastic, bird’s eye views of Urumqi. You can also pay a visit to Red Hill Park, which is situated at the top of the hill. . ?

There  is also a nine-story steel gray brick pagoda  called Zhenlong (to subdue the dragon) Pagoda together with another  pagoda built on Yamalike Hill which stands facing Red Hill and is less than 1 kilometre away. The pagodas were built by Shang An in 1788 to prevent the hills from joining together. His reasoning was founded on rumours that a number of destructive floods between 1785 and 1796 were caused by the fact that the hills were coming closer and closer together. It is said that Red Hill and Yamalike Hill were formed when a dragon, having fled from the Heavenly Lake and caused untold damage, was sliced in two by a sword-wielding heavenly empress.  Each half of the dragon became a hill, - Yamalike in the west, Red Hill in the east-and the sword become Urumqi River. Since 1958, soldiers and peoples of all ethnic groups in Urumqi have planted trees and flowers, built bridges and constructed many pavilions and temples on the hill, gradually transforming the hill into a beautiful park.  Red Hill Park was opened to the public in May, 1985. Today, modern entertainment facilities can also be found in the park and visitors can sit amid the pleasant surroundings and enjoy folk music and dance performances.
