Brief information on Xinjiang Silk Road Museum  

Xinjiang Silk Road Museum is the only provincial museum to receive national approval for its unique theme. It is located in the prosperous business center of Urumqi, close to the famous ethnic shopping and tour center -International Grand Bazaar. It encompasses an area of 7080 square meters over six floors. It has been open to visitors since Jun. 29th, 2005.

The Silk Road has for ages been the central passage of goods and people bridging Asia in the east to Europe and Africa in the west. This route is steeped in the history of many great and ancient civilizations. And it is not surprising that many historical artifacts were recovered from this area of the Silk Road around Xinjiang. In the Silk Road Museum, visitors can gain a unique insight into the ancient civilizations of the Central Plains, to understand the precious pasture culture of the area, and appreciate the charm of ancient Western Region during the Han and Tang Dynasty through the excellently exhibited artifacts. The exquisite silk arts and large rock paintings cast light on the culture and spirituality of the ancient peoples who once lived here. The museum has received much acclaim both from home and abroad.
