Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum is a provincial level comprehensive historical museum in China. Located at the Xibei Road in Urumqi, the museum was built in the Uygur construction style in 1953 and opened to the public on October 1, 1963. With an exhibition area of 7800 square meters, the museum have 50,000 pieces of collections including historical relics, national relics and revolutionary ones.

The exhibitions of the museum can be divided into three themes: Exhibition of Xinjiang Folk Customs, Exhibitions of Historical and Cultural Relics unearthed from Xinjiang and Exhibition of Ancient Mummies. The exhibition of Xinjiang Folk Customs includes tools, costumes, and every day necessities which gives a vivid introduction to the lifestyle, religion, marriage customs, festival rites and other aspects of the colorful life of the 12 minorities that live in Xinjiang. The Exhibition of Historical and Cultural Relics include carpentries, iron wares, bronze wares, bright and beautiful brocades, tomb figures, pottery, coins, rubbings from stone inscriptions, and writings as well as weapons and so on. The Exhibition of ancient mummies displays some preserved bodies of men, women and babies discovered in the desert. Among them, the most famous one is the Loulan Beauty, a female corpse believed to be about 4,000 years old . Discovered in 1980 in the riverbed of the Tieban in Loulan City, it is believed she died in her 40s and be of indo-European ethnicity. When found, she was still clutching a small purse and wore leather and fur sandals. It ranks as the earliest and best-preserved mummified body in China.
