Xinjiang is one of the most vibrant and rewarding destinations in Western China, containing a multitude of unique treasures, one of which stands at the foot of Tian Shan Mountain and is known within China as “The Beautiful Pasture”. This treasure is none other than Urumqi, located at the northern foot of Tian Shan Mountain, set among picturesque rivers and mountains.  This rich and vast land is a renowned tourist destination in Western China. The old Urumqi River flows through the urban area from the south to the north. On the eastern side of the city, there is the Bogda Peak, standing at around 5,400 meters.  Tian Shan Mountain borders the city on the south; the mythic Monster Mountain stands to the west and the Red Hill occupies the center of the city. On the top of the hill, there is a nine-stage tower made from bricks, called Zheng Long Tower, which is profiled against the distant snowy mountain. All of these sites gel into a harmonious picture.

Urumqi is blessed with special geographical advantages and has been called the “Gateway of the Creation of the World”, and it is the transportation terminal between Xinjiang and the inland regions. Now it is the principal gate for China’s program of reinvigorating the Western region and is the gateway of cultural and economic exchange with foreign countries.  Urumqi is the geographical center of Asia. In the summer, when the flowers are blooming and the fragrance of the various fruits is in the air, tourists can take full advantage of the many splendours of the region.  In winter, the whole city is covered by a sheet of silvery snow, which displays a typical winter scene of Northern countries.

Urumqi, with its unique geographic location and its long, rich history, has forged a vibrantly unique culture in this ancient western region. It is important post on the famed, ancient Silk Road.
