Brief information on Baotong Temple
![]() |
Baotong Temple sits at the southern foot of Hongshan Hill in Wuchang. It was built during the Southern Dynasty (420 A.D. – 479 A.D.), giving it a history of more than 1580 years.
Baotong Temple is famous for the three springs and the fantastic rocks. The most well-known building in the temple is Hongshan Pagoda, which was built in the Yuan Dynasty in order to commemorate monk Ciren, and was also known as Lingji Pagoda. The Hongshan Pagoda is made of bricks and stones and is 44.3 meters in height, though the interior lies empty. On the hill at the back of the temple, there are trees called Yue Pines, named as such because it is said that the trees were planted by the hero of the nation and the people of Song Dynasty, Yue Fei.
