Wuhan has a long history, which can be traced back to the New Stone Age (around 6,000 years ago). The Panlong Castle Ruins in Huangpo District of Wuhan formed the palace of the Fang State in the Shang Dynasty, around 3,500 years ago, and are the best-preserved example of an ancient city of the Shang Dynasty. During the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods, taking Jing Mountain as a stronghold, Wuhan became the military and economic center for the Chu State. In the Tang Dynasty, Wuhan was a famous trading port. In the Qing Dynasty, it was one of the four famous towns. In 1889, Zhang Zhidong served as the governor-general of Hunan and Hubei. During his term of office, Zhang Zhidong promoted the Westernization Movement. He built the Hanyang Iron Works, Hubei Guns Factory and Lu-Han Railway, and set up the Hubei-Hunan Academy. As a result of this activity, Wuhan saw exponential. In 1954, Wuhan became the capital of Hubei Province, having previously been directly administered by the central government.
