Wuxi Travel Guide - Brief Information on Wuxi

Wuxi is located at the southern part of Jiangsu Province and at the center of the economically advanced Yangtze River Delta. It borders the Yangtze River to the north and Lake Tai (the third largest freshwater lake in China) to the south. Wuxi is 183 kilometers southwest of Nanjing and 128 kilometers east of Shanghai. It is a coastal city with a total area of 4,650 square kilometers, of which 1,931 square kilometers are urban.
 
Wuxi is an ancient city with a history of more than three thousand years. At the end of the Shang Dynasty, the Wu State was established, and the city of Wuxi began to grow. Wuxi produced abundant resources and was called a land of fish and rice. In the Ming Dynasty, Wuxi was home to advanced industry, and in the mid-nineteenth century it became one of the four largest rice markets in China, along with Jiujiang, Changsha and Wuhu.
     
The terrain of Wuxi is mostly plain. There are six districts and three county-level cities under its administration. Wuxi is also a transportation hub connecting Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province and Anhui Province. With a railway, highway, airport, and waterway, its transportation is convenient and easily accessible.

Wuxi has rich tourism resources which include both natural landscape and points of cultural interest. Wuxi is rated as a top tourist destination in China, and its famous attractions include Lake Tai, Turtle Head Islet, the Lingshan Grand Buddha, Donglin Academy, the Qingming Bridge, Nanchan Temple, Jichang Garden, and Tian Xia Di Er Quan (literally the “second best spring under heaven”).
