Brief information on Liyuan Garden

Situated southwest of Wuxi, Liyuan Garden occupies 5.4 hectares and is one of the most well-known lakeside gardens in China. The garden got its name from Fan Li, a senior official of the state of Yue who retired to his hometown after defeating the state of Wu. One day he went boating on what was then called Wuli Lake with one of the most beautiful women in ancient China named Xi Shi. Afterwards he decided to name the lake after himself, calling it Li Lake. The garden built on the shore of Li Lake was called Liyuan Garden.

Liyuan Garden is exquisitely designed, and its pavilions, causeways, and corridors, are harmonious in color. The most impressive sight in the garden is the thousand-meter-long corridor that winds its way through the park. Along the way are inscriptions by ancient calligraphers. Numerous lattice openings in the white wall afford views of the park from different angles. Nowadays, Liyuan Garden attracts increasing numbers of Chinese and international visitors.
