The Minnan Puppet Show is also known as mu’ouxi or kuileixi and can be dated back to over 2000 years ago. During performances, audience see only one or two marionettes appear on the stage but of these is of complicated structure with the head, shoulders, waist, and hands and feet all jointed and controlled by an operation board. Although the puppets are inanimate, the operator endows them with such soul and expression, simply through using their hands, that the characters seem almost real.
