Xiamen that comes under Fujian Province is a beautiful coastal city situated at the southeastern part of China. It looks over Taiwan Strait and has witnessed events in history that occurred in course of time. Otherwise known as ‘Amoy’, Xiamen city is so clean and charming that most people wish to live there. Xiamen consists of Xiamen Island, Gulangyu Island and large part of mainland land with Jiulong River in the west and Xiang’an Islands in the northeast.

History
Xiamen became an international port during Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) and it was used as a base to fight pirates during Ming Dynasty in 1387. After Xinhai Revolution, the name ‘Siming’ was later changed into Xiamen City.

Climate
Xiamen is a place with humid subtropical climate. It has hot and humid summer and short and dry winter. The best time to visit Xiamen is May through July.

Art & Culture
Xiamen is a land of musicians and painters and art & culture has a prominent place in Xiamen’s local life. Gulangyu Island in Xiamen is famous for its musicians and you can hear music lingering in the air as you walk down the streets in the island. There is even an International music festival held in every May. Xiamen is also world-known for its oil painting industry.

Nightlife
Though Xiamen has a calm and peaceful city atmosphere, it also offers vibrant nightlife and entertainment. The illuminated Zhongshan Road and Siming Road are very lively at night and are good for a stroll. The musical fountain show held daily at 8pm at the Egret Alluvion City Park is an eye-appealing sight. The Binlang Bar Street offers variety of bars and pubs such as the Jurassic Bar, the Cleopatra Bar etc…to cater local and foreign tastes.

Shopping
Xiamen’s own famous local products that you can purchase are pies from Gulangyu Island, dried sea-products, tea leaves from Xiaxi Road, vegetarian cakes at Nanputuo Temple etc... You can make your Xiamen visit a good shopping experience by browsing in many malls. While Zhongshan Road has huge malls to choose from, Longtou Road in Gulangyu Island offers plenty of traditional products, handicrafts, embroidery, paintings, and calligraphy etc…The Xiahe Road and Egret Alluvion Shopping and Entertainment City are the other major shopping venues.
