Xian Travel Guide - Brief Information on Xian

Together with Athens, Rome and Cairo, Xian is one of the most famous of the ancient cities; rich in a history that spans thousands of years. The Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang Dynasties have all established capitals here, making Xian a historical center of China politics, economic and culture. Today the capital of Shaanxi Province, Xian is the largest base of scientific research, higher education, and National Defense and high-tech industries in Western China.

Located in the center of China, Xian is situated at the centre of the Yellow River Basin. The terrain height drops from the southeast to the lower southwest and northwest, like a dustpan. The Qinling Mountain range dominates the landscape to the south of Xian, the natural border between southern and northern China. The mean yearly temperature of the city is about 13.3 centigrade.

Xian is a popular tour destination with numerous sights, including the Terra Cotta Warriors, City Walls, Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Grand Mosque. With the robust development of Xian tourism in recent years, tourist facilities at these sights have been greatly improved. The best travel seasons are April to May and September to October when the weather is cooler than the stifling midsummer, but the sun still shines and warms.
