Brief information on Da Xingshan Temple  

Da Xingshan Temple is located on West Xingshan Si Street in Xiaozhai, a popular local commercial district. It was initially established in the Jin Dynasty and was extended in the Sui Dynasty. After its reconstruction in 582AD, the temple changed its name to Da Xingshan Temple.

In the Sui and Tang dynasties, Buddhism was very popular in Chang’an (today Xian). Many notable monks and priests from India translated Buddhist Texts and imparted Esoteric Buddhism here in the temple. And in this way, Da Xingshan Temple gradually became one of the three sites for translating Buddhist Texts in Chang’an, and thus the cradle of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism.

In the Tang Dynasty, Da Xingshan Temple had no chance to escape from the national movement of demolishing Buddhism. Now, tourists to the temple complex can see the Tianwang Hall, Daxiong Baodian, Guanyin Hall, west and east meditation rooms, and the Back Hall all along one axle. In amongst these, the West Meditation Room offers valuable temple history information.
