Brief information on Daqin Pagoda
![]() |
Daqin Pagoda is the remnant of the oldest Nestorian church in China, which has lasted since members of the Assyrian Church of the East built it in the year 640. Daqin was the name of the Roman Empire in the Chinese language of the time. Located now in Zhouzhi County, Shaanxi Province, Daqin Pagoda has been through a lot in its long history. The persecution of Christians led to its abandonment in 845. Worse still, an earthquake in 1300 resulted in it falling into disuse for centuries to come. The pagoda was rediscovered in 1998, however, and the government carried out a series of restoration projects. Now recognized as a significant part of the history of early Chinese Christianity, Daqin Pagoda is classified as a key heritage site under state protection.
