Brief information on Green Dragon Temple  

The Green Dragon Temple is situated in the southeastern suburbs of Xian. It was established in 528AD, originally called the Linggan Temple, and changed its name to Green Dragon (Qinglong) Temple in 711AD.

Chinese Buddhism was flourishing as never before in the Tang Dynasty, and the Green Dragon Temple achieved prosperity in the middle of this splendid period. It influenced not only Chinese Buddhism but especially the development of Japanese religion. During the ninth century, many Japanese monks visited China to study Buddha dharma, amongst which, Konghai, Yuanxing, Yuanren, Huiyun, Yuanzhen and Zongrui, the six most notable Japanese monks, studied here in Green Dragon Temple. Konghai then returned to Japan and established Japanese Shingon Buddhism. The temple then became the primary ancestor of Japanese Shingon Buddhism and a holy place in the heart of Japanese.

In 1963, Green Dragon Temple was reconstructed on the site. Tourists will see the Japanese-invested architecture, Huiguo and Konghai Memorial Hall, and some locally excavated cultural relics. Green Dragon Temple is an engaging tourist attraction for most Japanese tourists.

Green Dragon Temple is best to see in April, with its colorful cherry blossom.
