Brief information on Maoling Mausoleum  

Maoling is the mausoleum of the Han Emperor Liu Che. As the largest tomb among the emperor mausoleums in West Han Dynasty, it was named after the location of Mao Village, about 40 kilometers northeast of Xian City.

Liu Che was the fifth emperor in the West Han Dynasty. During his reign of 54 years, ancient China consolidated its unification and gained in splendour.

Emperor Wu’s tomb is around 46 meters high and surrounded by tombs of Mrs. Li, Wei Qing, Huo Qubing, Huo Guang and Mi Di. Huo Qubing was an outstanding military officer at that time. To commemorate these young people, Emperor Wu constructed a tomb aside Maoling for Huo Qubing. This stone carving on the tomb is seen as the most ancient and complete and has a high reputation historically.

Maoling Museum is a museum focusing on the Western Han Dynasty period, with an integration of cultural relics, ancient buildings and garden settings. The excavated treasures displayed in the museum are mainly from Emperor Wu’s tomb, Huo Qubing’s tomb and stone carvings. The museum houses more than 4,000 pieces of relics, including national treasures of a gilt bronze horse, tiled eaves and a stone tiger sculpture. In the two main exhibition halls, tourists can appreciate some rare cultural relics, and learn more about the life and achievements of Emperor Wu.
