![]() |
The First Qin Emperor, named Ying Zheng, was one of the most notable emperors in ancient China. He came to the throne of Qin at the age of 13. From 236 to 221 B.C., he led his mighty army, galloping across the battlefield, to defeat six ducal states and unify China. After the unification of the country, Ying Zheng abolished a series of measures including politics, economy, culture and military, successfully strengthening unification and cultural and economic development. Ying Zheng was an outstanding emperor, ending separatist regimes, turning over a new leaf in Chinese society, bringing benefit to descendants and leaving behind a mysterious imperial mausoleum.
Located at the northern foot of Mt. Li, the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor is 30 kilometers east of Xian City. It was constructed over 37 years from 245 to 208 B.C. The mound is around 55 meters in height, the base of which measures about 345-meters in width from east to west and around 350-meter long, with a circumference of around 2,000 meters. It is surmounted by a mound of rammed earth shaped like a truncated pyramid, with hundreds of stone-paved steps leading tourists up to the top of the tomb. Beneath the burial mound is an underground palace where the coffin of Ying Zheng was placed. The mausoleum was designed elaborately and was rich in cultural relics. A satellite tomb, the Terracotta Warriors, has amazed the world. Many other miracles in the archaeological field will be revealed when all the linked underground treasures come to light.
