Princess Yongtai, named Li Xianhui, was the granddaughter of Emperor Gaozong and his Empress Wu Zetian, the seventh daughter of Emperor Zhongzong, Li Xian, of Tang Dynasty. She died in 701 when she was 17 years old from childbirth, according to the epitaph. Supposedly, both she and her husband died suddenly after the emergence of Wu Zetian’s dictatorship.
The tomb is pyramid-shaped and consists of the main tomb passage, doorways, skylights, niches, an antechamber and tomb chamber, totalling 87.5 meters. The exquisite and vivid murals covering the walls on both sides of the tomb passage are eye-catching sights, and illustrate the imperial honor guard, celestial map and maid-in-waiting. The tomb chamber murals indicate the house where Princess Yongtai lived, and the stone coffins of princess and her husband are in the rear chamber. In front of the tomb mound, the entrance path is lined with a pair of stone lions, two pairs of stone figures, and a pair of obelisks.
There is also an exhibition hall in front of the tomb, displaying some of the excavated cultural relics.
