Brief information on Bird Island  

Bird Island is located in the northwest of Qinghai Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in China. The main island is actually a peninsula, while a small island—Haixi Shan—sits close by. During spring and summer, many birds fly from faraway mountains and deserts to breed on the island. April and May are the noisiest months when the number of birds can reach ten thousand, 80% to 90% of which stop on Haixi Shan to lay eggs. It’s truly a spectacular sight. Due to the eggs that dot the island, people have also called Haixi Shan “Egg Island.” The local people have a saying about Bird Island: “An empty boat goes into the lake, but out comes a boat loaded full of eggs.”

The southern part of the island has now been set up as a nature reserve to protect the birds that inhabit it. With its highly attractive natural scenery and many beautiful wildfowl, Bird Island has become a must-see spot for most tourists and birdwatchers.
