Brief information on Penglai Pavilion Scenic Area  

Penglai Pavilion is situated on top of Danya Mountain at the northernmost part of Jiaodong peninsula, which is 50 kilometers away from Yantai. Penglai Pavillion is one of the traditional and famous Lou or towers, the other three being Yueyang lou, Tengwangge Pavillion and Huanghe Lou. Penglai Pavilion has been called "fairy land" because of the mirages (optical illusions caused by hot air conditions, esp. that of a sheet of water seeming to appear in the desert or on a hot road) that often appear there. The pavilion is an ancient construction complex which includes Mituo Temple, Longwang Palace, Zisun Palace, Tianhou Palace, Sanqing Palace and Lvzu Palace. It is said that the story about the eight fairies or immortals crossing the sea happened here.

Penglai Water City is under Penglai Pavilion and is located to the east of Danya Mountain. It was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The water city has an area of 270,000 square meters and is wider in the south and narrower in the north. Water City is presently the most complete ancient military naval base in China. The nation’s heroine Qi Jiguang once trained the naval units here to resist the invasion by Japanese enemies. In 1982 Penglai Water city was designated as a key national cultural relic along with the Penglai Pavilion.

Transportation:You can take a bus at Yantai Bus Terminal Station to Penglai. After arriving at Penglai Bus Terminal Station, you may have a walk to the scenic area because it is only about 1 kilometers away.
